Draw vs Block Dominoes: What Is the Difference?
Draw and Block use the same tiles, the same starting hands and the same matching rule. The only real difference is what happens when you cannot play: in Draw you pick up tiles from the boneyard, in Block you pass. That one rule changes the pace and the strategy of the whole game.
Side-by-side comparison
| Feature | Draw | Block |
|---|---|---|
| Boneyard | Yes: the undealt tiles stay face down for drawing | No: the undealt tiles stay out of play |
| When you cannot play | Draw tiles until one fits; pass only when the boneyard is empty | Pass at once |
| Starting hand | 7 tiles with 2 players, 6 with 3, 5 with 4 | The same: 7, 6 or 5 tiles |
| Blocked rounds | Less common: only when the boneyard is empty and nobody can play | Common: a closed table ends the round |
| Who scores | The player who goes out, or the lowest pips in a block, collects the opponents' pips | The same |
| Match target | 100 points | 100 points |
| Pace | Slower and luckier: your hand changes as you draw | Faster and more tactical: you play with the tiles you were dealt |
How a blocked round ends
A round is blocked when nobody can play. The player with the fewest pips left wins the round (a tie goes to the player with fewer tiles) and collects the pips left in the opponents' hands.
When to choose which
Choose Draw if you are new to dominoes, want a relaxed game or like the comeback chances that drawing gives you. Choose Block if you enjoy counting tiles, steering the table and forcing opponents to pass: every tile in your starting hand matters, so planning pays off. If you also want points during play, try All Fives, which uses Draw rules plus scoring on multiples of five.
Draw vs Block: questions
Which is easier for beginners, Draw or Block?
Draw is gentler because you can pick up tiles instead of passing. Block is quick to learn but less forgiving.
Do Draw and Block use the same scoring?
Yes. The winner of a round collects the pips left in the opponents' hands, and the first player to reach 100 points wins the match.
